A devastating tragedy unfolded on Tuesday along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, resulting in the loss of 16 lives and leaving three others injured. The incident occurred near Buhari Estate at approximately 1:00 PM, when a white Mazda bus, bearing registration number KJA 949 YJ, collided while transporting a filled gas cylinder. The subsequent explosion, triggered by a fire, led to catastrophic consequences.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the details of the incident through a statement issued by spokesperson Florence Okpe. According to Okpe, a total of 21 individuals were involved in the accident. Sixteen victims perished in the crash, their bodies burned beyond recognition, making it impossible to determine their gender at the scene. Three other passengers were injured and were immediately transported to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for treatment.
Ogun State Sector Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, who led the rescue operation, expressed his deep concern over the driver’s reckless decision to transport a highly volatile substance like gas in a passenger vehicle. Fasakin strongly condemned this dangerous practice, stressing that gas cylinders should only be carried in specialized vehicles with qualified personnel to ensure safety.
In addition to overseeing the rescue efforts, Fasakin participated in the cleanup and recovery process, working to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow on the busy expressway.
Fasakin offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and called on all motorists and passengers to prioritize safety in all their travels.
