Atalanta 2-0 defeat by Inter Milan in the Supercoppa Italia semifinal on Thursday has left Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman’s landmark moment bittersweet.

Lookman had achieved a remarkable milestone for Atalanta BC, marking his 100th appearance for the club.

Lookman joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022 and has since become a pivotal figure in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad.

Coach Gian Pero Gasperini had benched regulars like Ederson, Charles De Ketelaere, and Nigerian star Lookman in the first half of the match until they conceived first goal in the second half.

Replacing Nicolo Zaniolo in the 56th minute of the match, the Nigerian star had little impact during his 35-minute cameo, as Dumfries sealed Inter’s win with a second goal in the 61st minute.

Since his arrival at the Bergamo-based club, Lookman has been instrumental in Atalanta’s success. He notably claimed a Europa League medal after scoring a memorable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, which secured victory for his team.

The forward’s brilliance extends beyond club football. He played a key role for the Nigerian national team in advancing to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which further solidified his reputation.

These achievements earned Lookman the prestigious CAF African Player of the Year award for 2024 and a commendable 14th-place finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings.

Lookman’s consistent performances have caught the attention of top European clubs, who are looking to bolster their squad with his signature.

With his 100th appearance behind him, it remains to be seen how much longer the former Everton star will don Atalanta’s colours before seeking an exit from the club.
