COVID-19: FG okays religious gathering

President Muhammadu Buhari has given the go ahead for religious gathering across the country following its previous ban due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who is also the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 made this known during the briefing on Monday.

He said the relaxation is expected to span four weeks effective from 2nd June to 29th June.

“Relaxation of restriction on places of Worship based on guidelines issued by the PTF and Protocols agreed by State Governments.

“Manage access to markets and locations of economic activity to limit the risk of transmission.

“Ban on inter-state travels except for the movement of agricultural produce, petroleum products, manufactured goods, and essential services.

“Mandatory use of non-medical face masks in public places,” he said

Some states government had at various times during the restriction on religious gathering relaxed the ban on such gathering allowing faithful to converge for religious purposes, move the FG cautioned against.

In spite this new development Mustapha warned that the country is yet to reach the peak of the spread of the disease advising Nigerians not to see the next phase of relaxation as the end of the spread of the virus.

He added that the period of national curfew has been adjusted from 8.pm – 6.am to 10.pm – 4am.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said as at Sunday May, 31st the country has discharged 3007 patients, 6868 active cases, and 287 deaths.

The PTF pointed out that 20 local government areas of all the 774 in the country recorded 67 percent of the total 10,162 confirmed.

63,882 tests have been carried out but the government said it intends to conduct two million tests within two months.

Other businesses to resume operations include, financial institutions, all manufacturing companies, Hotels, while schools, night clubs and other relaxation places are to remain shut.
