The Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday terminated the appointments of all political appointees attached to its members without delay.
The termination of these appointments was announced by the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, during a plenary session held in Benin City.
In his announcement, he emphasized that the decision to dismiss the appointees had received unanimous support from all 24 members of the Edo State House of Assembly, and added that those dismissed would still receive their February salary as a severance package.
According to Agbebaku, the affected appointees included special advisers, senior special advisers, and other political appointees affiliated with the members of the Edo State House of Assembly.
The Speaker explained that the appointees were initially appointed by House members upon the inauguration of the Eighth Assembly in June 2023.
In his words, “I believe it has been nearly two years now, and the House has graciously agreed that these appointees, including special advisers and senior special advisers, should be relieved of their duties as of today, 19 February.”
“We will convene subsequently to determine the next course of action. However, they will receive their salaries for this month.”
