In a brutal incident, gunmen stormed the Umunze Police Station in Anambra State’s Orumba South Local Government Area on Monday, leaving two policemen on duty dead in the attack.
The attack on the Umunze Police Station comes just two weeks after unidentified hoodlums bombed the Divisional Police Station in Oba, another local government area in Anambra State, suggesting an alarming trend of targeted violence against police facilities.
Confirming the attack, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga reported that the bodies of the two slain policemen had been recovered and taken to a mortuary. The incident has been officially confirmed by the police command, acknowledging the tragic loss of life among their officers.
He said “A joint security force has been deployed to track down the perpetrators,” Ikenga said. “Five unexploded improvised explosives were recovered from the scene.”
The Anambra State Police Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam, personally assessed the aftermath of the attack on Umunze Police Station. During his visit, he called on the public to provide any pertinent information that could aid the investigation while assuring complete confidentiality for those who choose to come forward
Also responding to the incident, member of the House of Representatives Princess Chinwe Nnabuife condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling it “senseless” and offering her heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers.
She said “My office is working tirelessly with relevant federal government security agencies to address the security challenges facing Umunze and Orumba,” Nnabuife said. “We are committed to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice and measures are put in place to prevent future incidents.”
Princess Nnabuife implored the community to maintain calm and stay alert, encouraging cooperation with security forces in their endeavors to restore peace and order to the region.
