In a dramatic turn of events, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kaduna State has publicly distanced itself from Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State.
During a press conference held on Friday, the Assistant National Secretary for the North West region of the SDP, Alhaji Idris Inuwa, stated that the party has no record of El-Rufai’s membership, effectively disowning the politician.
Inuwa also addressed the growing tension within the party, rejecting claims of the dissolution of the State Working Committee of the SDP. He accused certain individuals of attempting to hijack the party, pointing to an illegal move to dissolve the duly elected leadership.
He made it clear that the Kaduna State Executive Committee was the legitimate outcome of a proper and constitutional state congress, reflecting the will of the party members. Inuwa stated that the Executive Committee had a four-year mandate, which was legally binding and recognized throughout its tenure.
He condemned any arbitrary attempts to dissolve this leadership structure, describing them as a violation of the party’s constitution and an undermining of internal democracy.
“The SDP constitution provides clear procedures for the dissolution of a State Exco, which include initiating an investigation, setting up a committee, and offering fair hearings in a transparent manner before any decisions are made,” Inuwa emphasized. “None of these steps were followed. Instead, there was simply a unilateral letter of dissolution, which is illegal and unconstitutional.”
Furthermore, Inuwa criticized the establishment of a caretaker committee led by a single individual, branding it as “null, void, and without legal effect.”
He reassured members of the SDP that while the party welcomed growing interest from new members, any such admission must follow the well-defined constitutional guidelines set by the party.
