Mr Macaroni gets Gatefield award
Popular Nigerian skit maker, Debo Adebayo, also known as Mr. Macaroni, has been awarded 2021 Gatefield Award.
He won the award under the category of People Newsmaker for Social Justice for his role during the #occupylekkitollgate in 2021, demanding justice for victims of the #endsars protest that resulted in the death and injury of many Nigerian youths at the Lekki Toll Gate.
According to a statement by Safiya Pereira Ibrahim, the Project Manager of Gatefield People Journalism Prize for Africa, Mr. Macaroni, at great risk “remained undeterred after the brutal murder of anti-police brutality #endsars protesters in Lagos, Nigeria.
“He advocated for victims’ accountability and was arrested for leading the #occupylekkitollgate protests in memory of state violence victims. We selected Debo Adebayo for remaining undeterred in his pursuit of justice and accountability for the victims,” she said.
In other categories, South African Daneel Knoetze, won People Journalist of the Year 2021 while Ethiopian Lucy Kassa was awarded People Journalist for Informed Commentary 2021.

According to the statement, nominees and winners were selected by journalists, human rights defenders, and public opinion shapers across the continent.
