The road to glory just became a lot more difficult for Nigeria’s Flying Eagles at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Egypt was confirmed as the new host for the tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded the hosting rights to the Egyptian Football Association and the Egyptian government, following Côte d’Ivoire’s unexpected withdrawal from the event.

The Ivory Coast had been set to host the competition, initially scheduled to begin on April 26, 2025. However, unforeseen circumstances led to their exit from the race, paving the way for Egypt to step in, fulfilling their long-standing ambition to host the prestigious event. The tournament will now kick off on April 27, with the final set for May 18, 2025.

This switch in hosts brings a significant twist to the tournament, especially for the teams in Group B, which includes Nigeria. The Flying Eagles will now face a daunting trio: Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco.

With Egypt playing on home soil, they are sure to bring their A-game, while Morocco and South Africa are no strangers to tough competition, making Group B one of the toughest draws in the tournament.

The situation has also created a shakeup in the group-stage lineup. With Côte d’Ivoire out, their spot in Group A will remain vacant, leaving Ghana, Tanzania, the Central African Republic, and DR Congo to battle for just two qualification spots.

For Nigeria, this means their journey to the title will be even tougher than anticipated. The Flying Eagles will need to navigate through the challenge of playing against a host nation with home advantage, along with two other strong contenders in South Africa and Morocco.

How will they rise to the occasion? Only time will tell if they have what it takes to overcome these challenges and claim glory at the 2025 U-20 AFCON.
