Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda. His return to the position was confirmed during Monday’s plenary session.
In January, Obasa was removed from office amid serious allegations, including poor leadership, authoritarian behavior, chronic tardiness, and accusations of financial mismanagement and intimidation of fellow lawmakers. Over 90% of the Assembly members had backed his impeachment.
Obasa, however, fiercely rejected the impeachment process, arguing that constitutional procedures had not been followed. He denied all allegations, particularly those concerning financial misconduct, declaring, “Any claims of financial impropriety are simply impossible.”
The political crisis within the Assembly was eventually resolved with the intervention of key figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former governors Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun), and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos). Acting on the direct instruction of President Bola Tinubu, these influential figures used their political experience to mediate and guide the Assembly toward a peaceful resolution.
Following a reconciliation meeting, Mojisola Meranda and other principal officers tendered their resignations. Meranda formally announced her departure as Speaker during the plenary session, paving the way for Obasa’s swift return.
Expressing his gratitude, Obasa thanked lawmakers for their support and urged them to put aside differences for the greater good of the state and its people. His reinstatement signals a new chapter in the Assembly’s leadership, but only time will tell if this resolution brings lasting stability or if underlying tensions will resurface.
