Okowa offers Delta prisons’ inmates 500 scholarships
In line with her annual tradition, the wife of the Delta State Governor, Mrs Edith Okowa through her pet project, the 05 initiative on Thursday offered scholarship to 500 inmates at the five correctional centers in the state including food items to mark her 60th birthday
The inmates were also empowered with food items, clothes, and 1000 mattresses among others while a cash donation was made towards their upkeep.
Mrs Okowa had last week donated food items compromising bags of rice, bags of onions, gallons of oil, cartoons of tomato paste, cooking condiments, packs of soft drinks and bottled water as they were received by the comptroller of Corrections, Ovie Sunday for onward distribution to the correctional centers through the Director General of the 05 initiative, Mrs Oghenevwe Agas
Speaking to Journalists in Asaba, Okowa said” By the grace of God, we have been consistent with keeping that promise by ensuring that every year we cook and distribute food to the inmates across the five correctional centers” explaining that the distribution of the food items including the scholarship was part of the activities marking the celebration of her 60th birthday.
She added that” During the# EndSARS protest last year, I visited one of the correctional centers and I was admonishing the inmates not to escape even if the hoodlums broke down the prison walls but I was shocked by their response. They told me to my face that if not for anything else but because of the food they receive from her as the Governor’s wife, they would remain calm and not escape”
