Police Officer Killed, 19 Shi’ite Members Arrested in Abuja Clash

A police officer has been confirmed dead and 19 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi’ites, have been arrested following a violent clash in Abuja on Friday.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command disclosed the incident in a statement released Friday night by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh. According to the statement, the clash occurred around 2:20 PM on March 28, 2025.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, condemned the attack on law enforcement officers, describing it as a “senseless act of violence” and vowing that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

While the circumstances surrounding the confrontation are still being investigated, authorities confirmed that operatives were deployed to restore order and ensure public safety. In the process, one officer sustained fatal injuries, and 19 IMN members were taken into custody.

The police reiterated that the IMN remains a proscribed group and warned against any unlawful assemblies or activities within the FCT.
