The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for restraint amid growing calls for Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s resignation, following sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The controversy began as a disagreement over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber, which later escalated when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan publicly accused Akpabio of sexual harassment during an appearance on Arise TV. The accusations have since stirred significant political and public attention.

Rev. Joseph Hayab, Chairman of CAN for the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, condemned the ongoing dispute as “shameful and unfortunate.” Speaking at a media engagement in Kaduna, Hayab stressed the importance of resolving the matter through dialogue and mediation from respected figures. He emphasized that both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan have individuals they respect who can help broker a peaceful resolution.

“We urge elders and respected national figures to step in and mediate,” Hayab said. “It is important that members of the National Assembly take responsibility in handling this matter in a manner that is fair and just.”

CAN further cautioned against the calls for Akpabio’s resignation, asserting that no individual should be presumed guilty without a proper investigation. “Allegations of sexual harassment are serious, but they must be handled with fairness and sobriety,” Hayab added. He also warned against taking sides prematurely, suggesting that such actions could heighten tensions unnecessarily.

Additionally, CAN called for a more responsible approach to media coverage, urging the press to avoid sensationalizing the issue. The organization noted that inflammatory reporting could worsen societal divisions, particularly those based on gender and regional tensions.

As the political landscape heats up, CAN urged political leaders to focus on governance, particularly the timely passage of the 2025 national budget, which they described as a pressing concern for lawmakers.

The call for calm from CAN highlights the need for a measured and balanced approach as the situation unfolds, underscoring the importance of justice, fairness, and national unity.
