Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Presidential Spokesperson to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has passed away at the age of 72.

Okupe, a native of Iperu-Remo in Ogun State, died in Lagos on Friday morning after a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by the Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, Jamiu Ashimi, who stated, “I just confirmed the tragic news of the passing of Dr. Doyin Okupe. May his soul rest in peace.”

A seasoned political strategist, Okupe served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Obasanjo and later as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Jonathan. His political career spanned over two decades, during which he played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s media and political landscape.

Beyond his work in government, Okupe also served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign. However, his career was not without controversy. In December 2022, he was convicted of money laundering, a development that led to his resignation from the campaign. Despite these setbacks, he remained an influential voice in Nigerian politics, known for his media expertise and public engagement.

At the time of this report, the exact details surrounding his death remain unclear. His passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian political communication and strategy.
