Tensions escalated in Rivers State on Wednesday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied access to the official quarters of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Aba Road, Port Harcourt. The quarters, where lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have been holding sessions, were locked upon his arrival.
Accompanied by top government officials, including Secretary to the State Government Dr. Tammy Danagogo and Chief of Staff Edison Ehie, Governor Fubara was met with a sealed gate, preventing his entry.
Addressing journalists at the scene, he accused the Speaker of the Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, of deliberately avoiding him, stating that repeated phone calls and a formal invitation letter had gone unanswered.
“Before my arrival here, I made several attempts to speak to the Speaker. I also sent a letter transmitting this particular invitation,” Fubara said. “Unfortunately, at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today.”
Despite the setback, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Rivers State and carrying out his constitutional duties. “The reason we are doing this is in the interest of our people, which is the most important thing. I don’t think there is anything to worry about. I expect to hear from them after today,” he added.
The development highlights the deepening political rift between Governor Fubara and allies of his predecessor, Wike, raising concerns over governance stability in the state.
