Kebbi State is grappling with a meningitis outbreak that has claimed the lives of 26 people across three local government areas (LGAs). The tragic development was confirmed in a press briefing on Tuesday by the State Commissioner for Health, Yanusa Ismail, in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi.
The affected areas – Gwandu, Aleiro, and Jega – have reported a total of 248 suspected cases of meningitis. Of the 11 samples sent for laboratory testing, three have been confirmed negative. However, the death toll continues to rise, with Gwandu suffering the most fatalities (18 deaths), followed by Jega (6), Aleiro (4), and Argungu (1).
In response to the outbreak, the Kebbi State Government has allocated ₦30 million for the procurement of medical supplies, including critical drugs, to help contain the disease and prevent further loss of life. To further mitigate the spread, isolation centers have been set up to manage ongoing cases.
Health Commissioner Ismail urged residents to prioritize hygiene and avoid crowded spaces to limit the transmission of meningitis. Additional samples from suspected cases have been sent to Abuja for further testing and confirmation.
As the state works to combat this deadly outbreak, public awareness and adherence to health guidelines will be crucial in stopping the spread of the disease.
