There is need for more awareness to encourage women to embrace Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for economic development of the country.

This was part of the view of stakeholders at a forum on Thursday in Abuja on improving women and girls access to Information and Communication Technology education and the usage of existing facilities across the country.

The forum organised by Africa Center for Citizens Orientation (ACCO) brought together Civil Society Organiations, National Communications Commission, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

The National coordinator of ACCO, Olugbenga Adeleye said that there is need for women who are grounded in ICT and other fields to motivate other young women in the country. He said this would go a long way to improve women and girls involvement in ICT.

He also called for the government to give out one of the over one thousand ICT centers across the country to CSOs to manage as a model for women and girls development in ICT.

Participants at the forum advised that education curriculum and the system as a whole should be improved upon to match existing realities in today’s world of ICT. They advised that the Ministry of Education should partner with the Nigeria Communications Commission and other relevant agencies in ICT to improve girls participation right from school.
