Senate Backs Emergency Rule in Rivers, Calls for Peaceful Resolution
In a move that aligns with the decision of the House of Representatives, the Senate has exercised its constitutional authority under the amended 1999 Constitution to ratify President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The Senate’s endorsement empowers President Bola Tinubu to implement emergency measures and policies within the state, subject to periodic review at any time within the six-month period.
Consistent with the Constitution, the National Assembly has also established a joint committee, comprising members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State for the duration of the declared state of emergency.
Furthermore, the Senate resolved to form a mediation committee composed of eminent Nigerians, tasked with finding a peaceful solution to the political crisis plaguing Rivers State during the state of emergency.
The Lawmakers made a decision on Thursday in a private meeting to discuss the declaration and suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and other elected officials.
The closed-door session was announced shortly after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from President Tinubu during the day’s plenary session.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele subsequently moved for a closed session pursuant to Order 135 of the Senate rules while Senator Abba Moro seconded the motion.
