The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully raided an unauthorized maternity home allegedly involved in child trafficking, unlicensed medical practices, and the impersonation of certified medical professionals.
The operation, which took place in the Usung Atiat area of Abak Local Government Area, led to the rescue of several vulnerable women and infants.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Timfon John revealed in a statement on Friday that the raid was carried out following credible intelligence. During the operation, authorities arrested a woman who was found harboring seven pregnant women and five infants, ranging in age from two weeks to one year.
Further investigation at the scene uncovered a range of unapproved medical supplies, including syringes, drip lines, herbs, and immunization records, all of which were in the possession of the suspect without legal authorization.
The rescued women are currently under police protection, while authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the illegal activities. The police have assured the public that they are committed to eradicating any criminal operations that prey on vulnerable individuals.
In a statement, PPRO Timfon John emphasized the police’s dedication to safeguarding the rights of victims and maintaining the rule of law. She also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, particularly those related to child trafficking or unauthorized medical practices, to the nearest police station.
