Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has on Monday asked Nigerians to stop imposing deadlines on his evaluation of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing that he will offer his assessment when he feels it is necessary.
Soyinka, in an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, made it clear that no external pressure would influence his decision to comment on the government’s performance. He expressed his independence and said that he would speak only when he has substantial points to address.
“People should stop trying to work on my timetable for me; I had not swallowed an alarm clock,” Soyinka remarked. “I don’t see why I should put my alarm on and say: ‘One year has passed, now, I must make an assessment,’ if there is nothing I feel like talking about and if I am busy elsewhere.”
During a visit to President Tinubu’s Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, on December 24, 2023, Soyinka had been asked about his views on the newly inaugurated administration. At the time, he stated that he would withhold any judgment on the president’s leadership until a full year had passed since the inauguration.
