In a decisive move, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) administration in Awka, Anambra State, has expelled student Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious after she was found to have physically assaulted a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.

The expulsion of Precious from the University was conveyed in an official letter dated February 13, 2025, signed by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Victor I. Modebelu. The letter stated that the Student Disciplinary Committee had determined the student’s actions to be in violation of the university’s disciplinary regulations, particularly Regulation 4 (SDR), which prohibits physical assault of staff and faculty members.

Reports indicated that Precious physically attacked Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies. This incident garnered widespread attention after a video of the alleged assault surfaced online.

The attack on the lecturer followed the interruption of a TikTok video she was recording on campus. The confrontation led to public outrage and calls for disciplinary action.

As stated in the letter, Precious’ expulsion is effective immediately, and the university has directed her to depart from the university premises and surrender any NAU property in her possession to the appropriate authorities without delay.

The letter read, “The Ag. Vice-Chancellor has received the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee on the case of your assault on a lecturer from the Department of Theater and Film Studies, which was found to be a gross misconduct and violation of the Students Disciplinary Regulations particularly Regulation 4 (SDR).

“Consequently, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor has, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the Committee’s recommendation that you be expelled and you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The expulsion takes immediate effect.

“You are expected to vacate the University premises immediately and return any University property in your possession.”

The UNIZIK administration’s decision to expel Precious for her violent behavior sends a strong message about the importance of maintaining order and discipline within the university. This action has been met with a variety of reactions across the university community and beyond, with some commending the University for its Swift Action while others continue to discuss and debate the incident.
