As the airlift of Nigerian pilgrims for the 2025 Hajj commenced on Friday, the Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a faith-based civil society organisation, has urged all stakeholders to render their services with integrity, compassion, and a deep sense of religious responsibility.

In a statement issued by its national coordinator, Ibrahim Mohammed, the group reminded officials and service providers that Hajj, one of Islam’s five pillars, is a sacred obligation — and that sincere service to pilgrims, regarded as “guests of Ar-Rahman,” carries profound spiritual rewards.

“Beyond any economic gains, any service rendered sincerely to the guests of Ar-Rahman will surely earn Allah’s mercy,” the statement read.

IHR called on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), as well as state and FCT pilgrimage boards, to adhere strictly to their established standard operating procedures (SOPs), particularly concerning the coordination of transit camps. The group cautioned against previous practices where intending pilgrims were asked to report to camp under the expectation of airlift within 24 hours, only to remain stranded for days – a situation that exposes them to avoidable hardship before even departing for Saudi Arabia.

The organisation also stressed the need for full transparency in the distribution of the Basic Travel Allowance (BTA), urging officials to handle the process with honesty and accountability.

“We appeal to all service providers – both in Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – to uphold the terms of their engagement and discharge their duties faithfully,” the group added.

Turning its message to the pilgrims themselves, IHR reminded them of the honour and spiritual privilege of performing Hajj, noting that out of over a billion Muslims worldwide, they were chosen by Allah for this divine journey.

“Your goal should be to attain Hajj Mabrur,” the group advised. “Anything that seeks to obstruct that – whether from officials, service providers, or fellow pilgrims – should be seen as a distraction from Iblis, the cursed one.”

The statement urged pilgrims to demonstrate patience, resilience, and focus amid the logistical challenges that often accompany the Hajj experience.

“Remember that officials are human beings too – they are there to serve you, but they are not immune to mistakes. Show patience and remain committed to the essence of your pilgrimage.”
