In a moment laden with symbolism and global resonance, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with Pope Leo XIV during the pontiff’s official inauguration at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. The brief but poignant encounter on Sunday marked a significant chapter in Nigeria’s interfaith diplomacy, as Tinubu joined world leaders in celebrating the installation of the new head of the Catholic Church.

President Tinubu’s presence at the ceremony came at the invitation of Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, underscoring the importance the Holy See places on its relationship with Africa’s most populous and religiously diverse nation. Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected 267th pontiff, has a personal connection to Nigeria – having served at the Apostolic Nunciature in Lagos during the 1980s – describing the country as “particularly dear” to him in his official invitation.

As tens of thousands gathered at the Vatican for the grand installation mass, President Tinubu exchanged warm pleasantries with the Pope. Though the interaction was brief, the gesture was laden with meaning – a mutual affirmation of peace, fraternity, and shared spiritual values in an increasingly divided world.

“This visit reflects our commitment to peace and understanding,” Tinubu remarked during a private diplomatic dinner hosted by Cardinal Parolin on the eve of the inauguration. “Nigeria remains open to friendship, grounded in faith, and committed to building bridges of understanding.”

The President was accompanied by a high-profile delegation that included prominent Nigerian clergy and diplomats.
