The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olorundare Jimoh, has announced that the response time of his officers to robbery incidents and other public order offences has been reduced to under five minutes.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Jimoh assured residents that Lagos remains safe, thanks to proactive policing measures. He noted that most violent crimes in the state are either prevented or promptly detected, serving as a deterrent to potential offenders.
Jimoh dismissed the popular call for state police, arguing that the real solution lies in adequate funding of the existing Nigeria Police Force. According to him, unitary policing systems are effective in many countries, and Nigeria can achieve similar results with proper resources.
He also stated that the police have successfully eliminated traffic robberies in Lagos, attributing this achievement to improved officer conduct and strategic deployment. On the upcoming July 12, 2025, local government elections, Jimoh said the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission would determine any movement restrictions.
However, he added that the police would implement moderate restrictions only if necessary for security, emphasizing that the entire state would not be shut down as they have enough personnel to maintain order throughout the election.
