Telecommunications operators in Nigeria have attributed the recent decline in network quality to rampant vandalism and theft of critical infrastructure, warning that the situation could escalate if urgent action is not taken.

Under the umbrella of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), the telcos said they are investing heavily in network upgrades and capacity expansion following the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)’s recent tariff adjustment. However, these efforts are being undermined by the widespread sabotage of telecom assets across the country.

“At the wake of the marginal price adjustment… we promised to optimize our networks,” said a top official from one major provider. “But vandals are carting away our facilities without challenge and selling them in open markets. That’s why services are poor and could get worse.”

In a statement signed by ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Damian Udeh, the group expressed deep concern over the rising trend. They revealed that from May to July 2025, telecom infrastructure was vandalized in multiple states, including Lagos, Rivers, Abuja, Ogun, Osun, Imo, and Kogi, leading to widespread service disruptions.

Stolen items include power cables, batteries, diesel generators, rectifiers, and fiber optic cables – all vital for reliable connectivity. ALTON also highlighted a thriving black market for these stolen items, many of which end up powering private homes and businesses.

The group further blamed road construction and civil works for damaging underground cables and urged urgent intervention from the Office of the National Security Adviser, police, DSS, and NSCDC to protect critical infrastructure.
