The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man who falsely paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos,” along with three accomplices, thwarting their planned unveiling ceremony in Amuwo Odofin.
The suspect, identified as Engr. Chibuike Azubike, an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North LGA of Imo State, was taken into custody alongside Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41). Police confirmed that all four men are currently being held at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.
According to police intelligence, the group had concluded arrangements to unveil a prototype of a purported ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin. Acting on the tip-off, officers moved swiftly to seal off the venue and prevent the event from taking place.
The Command deployed conventional operatives, the Eko Strike Force, and other tactical squads to the site to maintain peace and ensure unsuspecting members of the public were not misled.
Confirming the arrest, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, said investigations into the suspects’ activities are ongoing and that they would be charged to court upon conclusion.
He warned Lagos residents to remain vigilant against impostors seeking to exploit cultural and traditional institutions for selfish purposes. “Such actions are unlawful, contrary to the statutes of Lagos State, and capable of breaching public peace,” Jimoh stated, adding that the police would continue to act firmly against individuals or groups undermining public order and the integrity of the state.
