Woman who came from Abuja to Lagos with seven-day-old child in night bus says she was asked to take her to another woman

In a case of suspected child trafficking, a woman who travelled with a seven-day-old baby from Abuja to Berger, Lagos State, has told police operatives that she was given the baby by a woman in the Federal Capital Territory to another woman in Lagos.

The woman, Joy Orban, aged 28 years, landed in trouble when some passengers in the night bus became suspicious and questioned her on why she was travelling in a night bus with such a baby.

So, on getting to Berger from Abuja, the alerted the police, who arrived at the bus stop and arrested her. She was eventually charged to the court.

The Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered the remand the woman at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly trafficking a-seven day-old baby.

Orban, who resides at Mayomi Street, Dutse, Abuja, is standing trial for child trafficking.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr L. A Owolabi, who did not take the suspect’s plea, ordered that she be remanded in Kirikiri till October 29 pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, told the court that the offence was committed on July 18 at Ojodu Berger, Lagos.

Ademigbuji said that the suspect boarded a night bus from Abuja to Lagos and that during the journey, one of the passengers questioned her on why she was traveling with a baby of such age.

He said that the passenger who was not satisfied and convinced by the suspect’s answer, alerted the police when they go to Berger.

The prosecutor said that during interrogation, the suspect told the police that she was given the baby girl by a woman in Abuja to give to another woman in Lagos.

Ademigbuji said that the police are working hard to get other accomplices.
