A newlywed wife who was arrested over the death of her husband has told men of the Jigawa State Police Command that she decided to put rat poison in his food because she was forced into the marriage by her parents.
It was gathered that on Friday, January 23, the command received a distress call regarding the death of a just married man after consuming a meal prepared by his wife at Gauza village in Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
According to the command in a statement on Saturday, January 24, preliminary investigation revealed that the man had the lunch prepared by his wife at home, after which he fell ill and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention where he was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
Following the man’s death, detectives from Jahun Divisional Headquarters were said to have swung into action and arrested the wife as the principal suspect.
During interrogation however, she confessed that she killed her husband by lacing his food with rat poison. She further revealed that she sent her cousin to purchase the poison used in committing the act.
“The lady also stated that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed led to her actions,” the command stated.
She was said to have given more details about the incident while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, after which she will be charged in court at the conclusion of the investigation.
