A nurse, identified as Olatide Emmanuel, has been sentenced to death by hanging by an Ekiti State High Court for performing a Ceaserean Section on a woman which led to her death.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Jubril Aladejana on Tuesday, March 11, in a case brought before the court in 2025 on a two-count charge bordering on murder and impersonation.
The 48-year-old nurse, who was described as a quack, was arraigned in 2025 following the death of a pregnant woman identified as Bosede Falade on June 24, 2019.
According to the prosecuting counsel, Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, “The offences are contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.”
The prosecution called seven witnesses and tendered statements, medical reports, and photographs of the deceased as exhibits.
Reverend Omotade, an eyewitness, told police that the deceased’s husband called him to report that his wife had died during childbirth.
Omotade said that on getting to the hospital where the woman died, he discovered that the nurse had carried out an unprofessional medical procedure on the woman, after which he called the police to take over the matter.
During cross-examination, the nurse told the court he had established a clinic in Erinmope Ekiti in 2019 after completing a nursing apprenticeship in Lagos State.
He claimed that the deceased was not his patient, adding that the CS he performed was successful, but the woman developed complications afterwards and later died.
“The deceased was not my patient, but came to inform me that she was due for childbirth. After some examination, I informed her and her husband that she would be delivered of the baby through a Caesarean Section, and they agreed.
“The operation was successful with both mother and child alive, but the mother developed complications thereafter and later died,” he said.
The nurse, through his counsel, Adeyinka Opaleke, did not call any witnesses.
In his judgment, Justice Aladejana said his actions were wickedly reckless, knowing he did not possess any professional qualifications to carry out a medical procedure.
