A popular columnist and former newspaper editor, Mr Bola Bolawole, on Sunday, September 27, accused men of the Oyo State Police Command of demanding the sum of N150,000 from his son over his car’s tinted glass.
Bolawole, who writes columns in the Sunday Tribune and other newspapers, said in a post on his Facebook wall that the incident occurred when his son was returning to Ife, Osun State, after visiting him in Lagos State.
According to him, while returning to Ife on Sunday morning, the policemen stopped him at a highway in Ibadan in connection with the tinted glassses in his car and took him to their station at Testing Ground, Iwo Road.
He wrote: “They are asking him for a bribe of N150,000 for his car’s tinted glass. He is being detained and he was not allowed to make use of his phone to make calls. He only managed to send quick SMS to one of the ministers in my parish (RCCG). I am in church for Sunday service.
“I am worried about his safety and well-being. Knowing Nigeria for what it has become right now and what errant law enforcement officers are capable of, I ask for help from all and sundry. This is a meek, gentle and easygoing 24-year-old.
“I understand they have taken my son to Agodi Area Police Command. He has a tinted glass permit.
“They are now saying he has to produce a medical report, that some people produce fake tinted glass permits.
“I specifically directed him to Mrs. Funke Sanyaolu who works with Lagos State at Old Secretariat, Ikeja who handles all car documentation for my family. They are also now asking him to give them anything he has as a bribe. I have instructed him to give them nothing.”
