My govt of national unity won’t last more than four years, Makinde vows

Presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Mr Seyi Makinde, on Saturday, October 10, strengthened his promise to run an all-inclusive transitional government of national unity that will not last beyond four years if elected president in 2027.
Makinde reiterated his promises while speaking at the North-East Zonal Town Hall Meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, on Saturday, as part of his ongoing engagements ahead of the general elections.
He said his proposed government would prioritise national unity, inclusiveness, honesty and practical solutions to the country’s challenges, adding that his administration would avoid concentrating political power in one part of the country to the detriment of others.
He said: “I stand before you today to tell you that the government you will put in place from May 29, 2027, will be a transitional government of national unity.
“Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government.”
On the country’s energy crisis and rising petrol prices, the APM candidate criticised the Tinubu administration for what he described as the failure of its policies on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the naira-for-crude initiative.
“They came up with the presidential policy on CNG and electric vehicles. That policy failed. They came up with the naira-for-crude initiative. That policy also failed.
“Yesterday, I listened to the Minister of Finance (Taiwo Oyedele) on television. He said they are now adopting price modulation for petroleum products,” Makinde recalled.
The presidential candidate, who said Nigerians needed relief rather than complicated explanations, urged the Federal Government to make its petrol pricing template public to promote transparency and allow citizens to contribute ideas towards resolving the crisis.
“We are asking for only two things. We do not want too much grammar; we just want relief for Nigerians.
“So, we ask the Federal Government to release its pricing template so that citizens will know how they arrived at the current petroleum price and let Nigerians see how things go. If they have a better solution, they will present it,” he said.
The APM candidate also accused the Tinubu administration of failing to deliver on its promises, particularly in the power sector, recalling the president’s pledge that Nigerians should not re-elect him if he failed to fix electricity within four years.
He said his engagements across the North-West, North-Central and North-East had exposed recurring challenges, including insecurity, poverty and inadequate electricity, which he promised to address through what he described as a sincere and inclusive approach to governance.
Makinde also explained that his campaign had deliberately delayed the release of its manifesto to allow the party to consult Nigerians across the country and incorporate their concerns into its proposed policies, promising that his administration would listen to citizens, respect their rights and avoid playing politics with issues affecting their welfare.
