The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a formal notice of misconduct allegations against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The allegations, raised by 26 lawmakers, were submitted in a notice to the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, on Monday. The accusations are based on provisions outlined in Section 188 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution and other relevant laws.

The charges against Governor Fubara include the reckless and unconstitutional use of public funds, obstruction of the Assembly’s legislative duties, and the appointment of individuals to key government positions without proper screening or confirmation. Other allegations include the withholding of salaries, allowances, and funds meant for the legitimate functioning of the Rivers State House of Assembly, as well as the illegal seizure of the salary of the Clerk, Emeka Amadi.

Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu is also accused of aiding and abetting the Governor’s alleged actions, particularly in making illegal appointments to government positions without the necessary vetting process.

In response, Speaker Amaewhule promptly forwarded the allegations to Governor Fubara, urging him to respond to the charges within the 14-day period specified in Section 188(3) of the Constitution. This provision mandates that the House of Assembly shall, within the 14-day window, resolve whether or not the allegations should be investigated.

The Speaker further emphasized that the allegations were brought forward by no fewer than one-third of the total members of the House, highlighting the gravity of the matter. He called on the Governor to take the appropriate actions to address the charges promptly.

This formal notice sets the stage for what could be a highly significant political development in Rivers State, depending on how the Governor and his Deputy respond to the accusations.
