A 19-year-old lady who disappeared with a new baby while pretending to be running errands for the mother shortly after she gave birth has been arrested by men of the Kebbi State Police Command.
The lady, Khadija Ibrahim, of Rikoto, Zuru Local Government Area of the state, was said to have carried out the act due to pressure from family and friends over her inability to have a child of her own.
The incident occurred last week when the lady, while pretending to run errands for Fatima Muhammad, who had just given birth, offered to fetch water for her but instead fled with the newborn.
All efforts to trace her and the child proved abortive which made the baby’s father to report the matter at the police station.
The police launched a manhunt which led to the arrest of the lady on August 14 while the baby was found with her and reunited with the biological mother.
According to the command, preliminary investigation revealed that the lady had allegedly been under pressure over her inability to have a child, as some of her peers had already given birth.
She was also reported to have deceived her husband into believing that she was pregnant and, after the birth of Fatima Muhammad’s baby, she fled with the child and allegedly presented it to her husband as their own.
She was said to have given more useful information about her nefarious activity and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation into the matter.
