Tragedy struck the Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan on Monday as the club’s newly appointed Assistant Coach, Akin Olowokere, collapsed and died during a morning training session.
The incident occurred at the team’s training ground in Ibadan, Oyo State. Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Online that Olowokere suddenly slumped while actively participating in the session. He was immediately attended to by medical personnel and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
At the time of filing this report, the exact cause of death had not been officially disclosed.
Olowokere, a former player for Sunshine Stars of Akure, was widely respected for his calm demeanor and deep knowledge of the game. After retiring from active football, he transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant coach under head coach Edith Agoye at Sunshine Stars before his recent appointment to 3SC.
He was unveiled only recently as part of the new technical team of the Oluyole Warriors following the exit of the Gbenga Ogunbote-led crew. His passing has left the club, its supporters, and the Nigerian football community in shock.
Known as a dedicated professional and mentor to many young players, Olowokere’s contributions to the development of football in Nigeria spanned over a decade. Tributes have begun pouring in from former teammates, players, and fans who remember him as a passionate football man, both on and off the pitch.
Club officials are yet to issue a formal statement, but sources within 3SC say plans are underway to honor his memory in the coming days.
