Nigeria’s Flying Eagles saw their hopes of lifting an eighth U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title dashed on Thursday after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to South Africa in a high-stakes semi-final showdown at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt.
In a game defined by discipline, grit, and narrow margins, South Africa’s breakthrough came in the 66th minute through Tylon Smith, who expertly nodded home a corner delivered by Neo Rapoo. The goal—his first of the tournament—sent the Amajita into their first continental final since 1997.
Despite dominating possession for long spells and crafting several chances, Nigeria failed to find the cutting edge. Emmanuel Chukwu and Israel Ayuma were among the most threatening for the Flying Eagles but were repeatedly thwarted by South Africa’s goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe, who delivered a standout performance.
The match opened with both sides exhibiting caution, neither willing to overcommit. Nigeria edged the early exchanges with purposeful runs and sharper link-up play. Tahir Maigana came close with a driven effort, while South Africa remained compact and patient, waiting for their moment.
After falling behind, Nigeria intensified their attack. Head coach Aliyu Zubairu introduced Rickson Mendos and Bidemi Amole to inject pace and urgency, and the impact was immediate. Mendos came close just minutes after coming on, but Lowe continued his heroics between the sticks.
Ayuma nearly brought Nigeria level late in the game with a diving header, only for Lowe to pull off a reflex save that all but sealed South Africa’s place in the final.
For Nigeria, the result continues a frustrating trend of falling just short, marking their third straight exit at the semi-final stage following similar heartbreaks against Gambia in 2023 and Mali in 2019.
Nevertheless, the Flying Eagles can take consolation in having already secured qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. South Africa, meanwhile, will aim to go one better than their 1997 campaign and claim their maiden U-20 AFCON title.
Nigeria now turn their focus to the third-place playoff, where they will face tournament hosts Egypt, who fell 1-0 to Morocco in the other semi-final.
The Nigerian boys will play for third Place against Egypt on May 18th while South Africa will meet Morocco in the final.
