In a dramatic show of force early Thursday, security operatives blocked access to the National Assembly complex in Abuja ahead of planned June 12 Democracy Day protests.

According to eyewitness reports, police and officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed heavily outside the lawmakers’ offices, reinforcing the entrance with iron barricades and positioning a long truck to block entry. The move successfully prevented demonstrators from converging at the venue.

The protest, orchestrated by the “Take It Back” Movement alongside various civil society organisations (CSOs), was slated to spotlight what organisers describe as “two years of misrule, hardship, and insecurity” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

One of the Protest leaders  had earlier confirmed that activists would transition their demonstrations from Eagle Square to the National Assembly, aiming to leverage its symbolic significance as the President addressed a joint session of parliament.

Though lawmakers have yet to comment, security agencies maintained they acted to prevent disruptions and safeguard public order, citing concerns that protesters might occupy or blockade legislative premises.

In contrast to the barricade, CSOs and police in Lagos have engaged in talks to coordinate peaceful demonstrations. An agreement was reached to funnel marchers from Ikeja Under Bridge to Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota—ensuring the protest remains orderly and contained.

Rights groups like HURIWA have cautioned against excessive use of force, stressing the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and demanding that security operatives refrain from aggressive actions.

The situation at the National Assembly remains tense, with security forces maintaining their presence as demonstrations continue across other parts of the capital.
