A tanker carrying approximately 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned and exploded on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 11, 2025, while attempting a U-turn opposite the NASFAT Islamic Centre along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The incident, which occurred at around 3:00 p.m., triggered a massive fire that rapidly spread to at least eight nearby trucks. Some of the affected vehicles were transporting highly flammable materials, including gas and vegetable oil.
Emergency responders from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were swiftly mobilized from the agency’s Ibadan Operations Office. The operation was led by NEMA’s South West Zonal Director, Mr. Saheed Akiode, who confirmed that the fire had been successfully extinguished.
Two individuals sustained injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. No fatalities have been reported as of press time.
Traffic along the ever-busy expressway ground to a halt following the explosion and remained heavily congested into Thursday morning. Many inbound vehicles from Lagos were forced to drive against traffic before rejoining the correct lane.
The emergency response involved a coordinated effort among multiple agencies, including NEMA, the Nigerian Police Force, the Ogun State Traffic Management Authority (OGSTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Ogun State Fire and Safety Service, which deployed personnel from its Isheri, Sagamu, and RCCG stations.
As of 8:30 a.m. Thursday, evacuation of the wrecked tanker was still ongoing.
