A tragic bomb explosion rocked Awo-Idemili in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday, leaving one woman dead and five others injured. The blast occurred around 2:30 p.m. at Eke Ubaheze Market Square, a usually bustling commercial hub, sparking panic and confusion among residents.

The deceased, identified as Ngozi Umeh, a trader from Ubaheze village, was reportedly walking through the market when she unknowingly stepped on an explosive device. She suffered critical injuries from the blast and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later confirmed dead. Five other individuals sustained varying degrees of injury and are currently receiving medical treatment.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, the Imo State Police Command suggested that the attack was likely carried out by operatives of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group that has been linked to several violent incidents in the region.

Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, immediately ordered a tactical response to the scene. Personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Anti-Bomb Squad, and other specialized units were deployed to secure the area, evacuate the wounded, and conduct a thorough sweep for additional explosive materials.

“The area has since been declared safe, and normal activities have resumed under heightened security surveillance,” said Okoye. He added that the Commissioner of Police has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the command’s resolve to track down those responsible for the attack.

To that end, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been directed to launch a full-scale investigation. Authorities say they are exploring all leads to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the bombing.

The police have also issued a public advisory urging residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities or unattended objects to the nearest security agency. “This is a time for community vigilance. Security is a collective responsibility,” Okoye emphasized.

This latest incident adds to growing concerns about the deteriorating security situation in the southeastern part of Nigeria, where attacks linked to secessionist groups and unknown gunmen have surged in recent years. Tuesday’s explosion marks one of the deadliest attacks in the region so far this year, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of existing security measures in rural communities.

As investigations continue, residents of Awo-Idemili are left grappling with the aftermath of a violent act that has once again shattered the fragile peace of their community.
