President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid an emotional tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as more than a royal figure — a trusted confidante, guide, and fatherly figure.
In a statement posted on Sunday via his official X handle, the President reflected on the deep personal loss, noting that Oba Adetona’s passing came just hours after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom Tinubu also mourned.
“Kabiyesi was more than a royal father to me. He was a confidante, a guide, and a man of truth whose wisdom never failed to steady those who sought it,” Tinubu wrote.
The President, who was in Ijebu-Ode for the monarch’s eighth-day Fidau prayers, described Oba Adetona’s 65-year reign as one marked by “rare dignity, candour, and courage.” He lauded the Awujale’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people and his unshakable sense of duty.
Tinubu noted that the monarch’s passing leaves a deep void in Nigeria’s traditional institution, particularly in Yorubaland, where his voice and leadership carried immense weight. “His voice, leadership, and generosity will echo far beyond Ijebuland,” the President said.
Highlighting the Awujale’s enduring legacy, Tinubu emphasized that Oba Adetona exemplified the highest ideals of traditional leadership — integrity, service, and wisdom.
“May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort all who mourn him,” the President concluded.
