The Federal Fire Service has issued fresh safety advice to Nigerians, warning that improper placement of fire extinguishers could cost lives during emergencies.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency stressed that “every second counts in a fire,” and urged motorists and households to keep extinguishers in locations where they can be quickly accessed.
According to the Service, many vehicle owners make the mistake of storing fire extinguishers in their car boots. This, it noted, can cause dangerous delays when seconds are critical. Instead, the agency recommends placing extinguishers under the passenger seat or within arm’s reach.
“Accessibility saves lives,” the Service said, adding that timely response to small fires can often prevent tragedies.
The Fire Service also encouraged Nigerians to regularly check their extinguishers to ensure they are functional and to familiarize themselves with basic fire safety practices.
