Nigerian journalist David Hundeyin has once again ignited controversy following a provocative post on X (formerly Twitter) in response to the death of Jesutega Onokpasa, a prominent APC chieftain. Onokpasa, a lawyer and former APC spokesperson, died suddenly on June 9 under undisclosed circumstances.

Hours after the announcement, Hundeyin posted a scathing message mocking his legacy and past support for President Bola Tinubu. The post quickly went viral, dividing public opinion and stirring debate over political accountability, ethics, and the role of commentary in Nigeria’s democracy.

Hundeyin, known for his hard-hitting investigations and confrontational style, has long criticized the APC and Tinubu’s administration. Onokpasa had defended Tinubu’s policies on national television but later renounced his support, citing rising insecurity and economic hardship. His recent criticisms of the government had surprised many, making the timing of his death and Hundeyin’s remarks even more striking.

Reactions to Hundeyin’s post have been deeply polarized. While some praised it as unflinching truth-telling, others condemned it as tasteless and insensitive. Political analyst Theo Abu called it “a violation of basic decency.”

As debates rage online, Hundeyin has remained silent, once again placing himself at the center of Nigeria’s volatile intersection of politics, media, and public grief.
