A driver has been sentenced to three months imprisonment by a high court at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and also asked to pay the sum of N3.1 million for the vehicles damaged while evading arrest from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the highway.

The court sentenced the driver, Yusuf Baba, after he was charged with the offence of dangerous driving and assault. He was also ordered to pay ₦3.19 million for damage caused to FRSC patrol vehicle and the car of an offender during his brazen attempt to evade arrest.

He was however given an option of N50,000 in lieu of the sentencing.

The incident, which occurred under the Dantata Bridge, Abuja, unfolded when he was flagged down by FRSC operatives for overloading during a Mobile Court session.

However, instead of obeying lawful orders to stop, Baba recklessly sped off, lost control, crashed into an FRSC patrol vehicle and another offender’s car, causing damage to the two vehicles before fleeing the scene.

He was later apprehended at Major Filling Station, along CITEC Road, and promptly charged to court on two counts of dangerous driving and assaulting a marshal on duty.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday , October 29, the court found Baba guilty of dangerous driving, convicted and sentenced him accordingly, while discharging him on the count of assaulting a marshal on duty.

In addition to his prison sentence and payment for damages, the court suspended his driver’s licence for three months.
