One woman has died while four others sustained serious injuries following a head-on collision involving two Toyota Sienna buses on the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday.

The accident occurred in the early hours near Iyana-Iworo, along the busy Lagos corridor.

Confirming the incident, Olawale Afolabi, Head of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said both vehicles involved were fully loaded commercial buses.

He noted that emergency responders quickly evacuated the injured victims to a nearby trauma centre for urgent medical treatment.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that reckless driving by another Toyota Sienna triggered the crash, resulting in a head-on collision between the two vehicles,” Afolabi said.

According to him, LASEMA’s Tiger Squad from the C3 Command was activated at about 7:26 a.m. and arrived at the scene around 8:00 a.m. to coordinate rescue and recovery operations.

He added that LASEMA officials worked alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to secure the area, manage traffic flow, and clear the wreckage.

Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, described the crash as preventable and urged motorists to comply strictly with traffic regulations.

He cautioned against excessive speeding, reckless overtaking, and poor lane discipline, emphasising the need for greater vigilance on major highways and cooperation with traffic authorities.
