The Labour Party (LP) has rescheduled all primary elections ahead of the 2027 general election to May 30.
The party announced the rescheduling in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, on Thursday, May 21.
It added that the gubernatorial and state assembly primary elections, scheduled for May 27, have been postponed to May 30, noting that the presidential and national assembly primaries would be conducted on the same date.
The statement read, “Consequently, all primaries for the offices of president, governor, senate, house of representatives, and state houses of assembly will now hold simultaneously on Saturday, 30th May 2026.”
The Labour Party said the primaries were postponed due to the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration and the third anniversary of the present elected public officers.
“This decision became necessary following the coincidence of the earlier dates with two important national events.
“The 27th May date coincides with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir (Eid al-Adha) celebration, while 29th May marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across the country.
“In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary, the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule in order to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions.”
The party further apologised for the inconvenience the adjusted date might cause aspirants, stakeholders, supporters, and the public.
