A Lance Corporal of the Nigerian Army who was abducted by gunmen suspected to be bandits last week on a highway in Zamfara State has been rescued by soldiers alongside another captive.
This came as reports said at least seven persons were killed by bandits when they invaded a community in Sokoto State.
The Lance Corporal, Basiru Labbo, and the other captive, Lauwali Dan Ada, were rescued by troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA during what was described as a fighting patrol targeting terrorist hideouts in Zamfara State.
The Lance Corporal was abducted on Wednesday, July 22, along Zuru-Anka highway and had been held captive since then before his rescue and that of the other man by the soldiers during the operation.
Both of them are said to be currently receiving medical attention at a military facility in the state.
In another development, on Tuesday night, bandits believed to be loyal to Bello Turji attacked Tsamaye Village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to sources close to the community, the attackers split into two groups as one of the groups confronted security personnel while the other attacked the village.
At the end of the attack, at least seven people were killed, several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, an unspecified number of residents were abducted and a large number of livestock were taken into the forest.
The Northern part of the country, especially the North-West, has been under the grips of bandits and terrorists who unleash mayhem on residents of various communities in the states, killing some and abducting others for ransom.
