There was commotion on Wednesday, August 19, at the Onitsha Head Bridge in Anambra State when a policeman attached to a patrol team shot a man over his refusal to be arrested.
The commotion erupted at Ogbogwu Junction towards the Head Bridge, as residents blocked the Asaba-Onitsha highway, accusing the police officer of shootiting the young man who was said to be delivering a package for waybilling.
Some traders in the area were also said to have closed their shops in solidarity with the protesters while also shouting against police presence in the area.
It was gathered that the young man was later rushed to a hospital where he is currently receiving treatment contrary to reports on the social media that he had died.
In fact, shortly after the shooting incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Nnanna Oji Ama, paid a visit to the man in the hospital where he assured that justice would be done regarding the incident.
The CP subsequently ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the events leading to the discharge of the firearm. He also assured that the medical expenses will be covered by the police.
“The Commissioner of Police appealed for calm and urged members of the public to remain peaceful and allow the investigation to run its course. He reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human life and the rule of law,” the state police command said in a statement on Wednesday.
