A student of the University of Cross River, who identified himself as a leader of the cult group known as Vikings Confraternity and who was seen shooting in a video has told men of the Cross River State Police Command that that he did so to celebrate his signing out of the university.
The graduating student, Emmanuel Ejim Ejim, aged 24 years, was arrested following a video that went viral which showed some cult members in a moving vehicle while the young man was firing shots sporadically within the Calabar metropolis.
The video indicated that the shooting occurred in the early hours of September 17 and following the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state ordered for the immediate identification and apprehension of those involved.
Following the directive, operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) commenced an intelligence-led operation which led to the identification and tracking of the vehicle seen in the viral footage.
The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested, and information obtained during the operation assisted the police in tracing the cult leader to a hotel in Calabar, the state capital, where he was arrested.
During his interrogation, the graduating student was said to have identified himself as a leader of the Vikings Confraternity and also admitted that he was the person firing the shots in the viral video.
“The suspect further stated that he participated in his sign-out ceremony on the day of the incident and that the pistol used in the video was given to him by another member of the group who is currently at large,” the command said in a statement on Saturday, September 19.
He was said to have given more useful information to the police operatives while the operatives have intensified efforts to identify and apprehend other persons connected with the incident.
