Some fans of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, on Sunday, October 4, expressed divergent views over the retention of Eric Chelle as the coach of the team.

This followed the drubbing of the highly-rated team by Guinea Bissau who walloped them by 3-0 in the African Cup qualifier, a situation many fans considered as embarrassing and unacceptable.

Many fans blamed the lack of technical depth on the part of Chelle for the huge defeat suffered by the Super Eagles in the encounter.

However, on Sunday, some of the fans took to X and expressed their views on the suitability of Chelle to continue as the coach.

@son_oftheSoil_: “Abeg oo, let’s leave Chelle alone, he’s not the reason why Ademola Lookman started walking when he loses the ball and the opponents are countering us. He’s not the reason why Nwabali literally cannot dive, imagine a keeper who doesn’t dive? We need good competitive players in all positions and Chelle is good at recruiting new players.”

Samuel Kade wrote: “I thought the purpose of friendly matches is for future replacement or alternatives but such is not the case for our coach. He seems to be after result with old legs. I dont know what Ndidi is still doing in the Super Eagles team when Nnadi or Onyedika can do the work better.”

Hakeem Musa: “Time will tell! He should have built on the four nation winning team if actually he knows what he is doing. It is clear he has been parading a weak team. He should have dropped the mediocres before if actually he is a good coach!”

@SolDeltaborn: “Are we still rolling with the second hand black market coach? Nigeria it’s really a caricature when it comes to football, gathering unserious content creators to play football will never give you results. it’s time for us to have coach who has the grassroot mindset.”

Oluwakayode Samuel wrote: “He can’t lead the Super Eagles to anywhere, and that’s why he was sacked by Mali FA. I can’t imagine that a Mali national team reject will be leading the Super Eagles. As things stand now, with Eric Chelle, AFCON 2027 and Olympics are gone.”

Babatope Ajepe wrote: “We keep hiring a new driver and blaming him for the same bad road. Chelle might not be perfect, but until we fix what every coach meets on arrival, the promised land will keep changing drivers and never changing address.”

@Erigo2000: “I doubt if this man has the capability to win anything with the Super Eagles. He is a low-level coach who runs out of ideas at critical stages in a match.”

Sola Adegun wrote: “Mali saw this, that’s why they sacked this coach. This Super Eagles coach, he is just there to cash out. Nigeria will still not qualify for World Cup with this black market coach. How do you win match with this set of content creators you invited from abroad? Lazy coach, over hype.”

@Prolifichero: “No, not technically sound enough. Yes, the players too are bad, but there’s too much lack of technical depth in the setup and arrangements.”

@tboy49ja: “He is good, it’s the players we need to change.”

Azeez Olashile wrote: “He needs to give grassroots players chance. All this popular names wey dey our squad don chop better money. Important cups just be like friendly for their eyes.”

@Bluescope: He’s still the right man to lead us to success, it’s the players that are letting him down. The players have to step up their game by putting more efforts, not just come and be playing big boy ball for us. If they can, fight the same way they usually fight in their club.”
