Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently restructure Nigeria and push for the creation of state police through an executive bill to the National Assembly.
The call followed an expanded executive meeting held Thursday at the Akure residence of Afenifere’s National Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. In a communiqué issued by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere said worsening insecurity across the country makes the demand imperative.
“Much as the security agencies are trying their best, a lot still needs to be done to achieve the desired results,” the communiqué noted. It described the rising violence in Benue, Plateau, parts of the North-West, North-East, and South-East as “seeming genocide.”
The group urged Tinubu to act on his earlier declaration that state police is now a necessity by initiating constitutional amendments that will allow states to establish their own police forces.
“There is the need for strong policies on truth, justice, and a determination to ensure that no group poses a threat to others,” the group added.
Afenifere also restated its call for national restructuring, arguing that true federalism is key to resolving Nigeria’s governance and security challenges. The group said restructuring would empower regions to address their unique issues more effectively, paving the way for unity and progress.
The meeting comes amid increasing public concern over insecurity and growing support from civil society and political leaders for decentralised policing.
