The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has expressed deep concern over reports of physical assault perpetrated by the Honorable Member for Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Alex Ikwechegh, against an e-hailing driver.
In a video that has sparked outrage and condemnation, the APGA lawmaker was caught on camera repeatedly slapping and verbally attacking an e-hailing driver identified as Stephen Abuwatseya. This reprehensible incident unfolded when the driver requested the lawmaker to come outside and collect the snail delivery he had ordered.
The footage captures Honorable Ikwechegh asserting that the driver’s request was an affront to his status and authority, thereby threatening to make the driver “disappear” without facing any consequences.
In a statement responding to the video on Monday, APGA condemned the behavior of its party member, declaring that Honorable Ikwechegh’s violent conduct is inexcusable and represents a violation of the party’s constitution and values.
The National Publicity Secretary of APGA, Mazi Ejimofor Opara issued a press statement on behalf of the party expressing its strong condemnation of the alleged actions of Honorable Ikwechegh.
Opera emphasized that the party has zero tolerance for any conduct that falls short of its principles of civility, decorum, and integrity. All APGA members, particularly elected officials on the party’s platform, are expected to exemplify the highest standards of behavior, not just in public, but also in their personal interactions. This ethos is at the core of the party’s values and is non-negotiable.
The statement read in part, “The attention of our great party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance has been drawn to a viral video of alleged assault meted out to a citizen by the Honourable member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Alex Ikwechegh.
“As a political party founded on respect for Human Rights, we roundly condemn the action of our said member and Federal Parliamentarian, Alex Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, on the platform of our great Party.
“As a party, we are founded on the basic principles of upholding the dignity of all humans, irrespective of class, creed and/or ethnicity. The recent video allegedly showing Ikwechegh assaulting a cab driver is totally unacceptable and runs counter to what our Party – APGA – represents.
“In line with APGA’s constitution, the Leadership of the Party shall set up a disciplinary committee to investigate the act, and if found wanting, appropriate sanctions shall be meted on him in line with the Constitution of APGA.
“Our party shall not tolerate any verifiable conduct that is not in tandem with the ideals of our founding fathers. In APGA, we are our Brother’s and Sister’s keeper and it cannot be any other way.”
