Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has appointed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano in the ruling Fulani dynasty.

This came few hours after state government announced the dethronement of Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.

Until his new appointment, Aminu Ado Bayero was the Emir of Bichi.

While announcing the appointment of the new Emir on Monday, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, said:

“I have been directed by his Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje following the resolution of the state Executive Council and recommendation by Kano Kingmakers to announce the appointment of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the new Emir of Kano.

“In my capacity as the Secretary to the state government, I have been directed by sections 11 subsection 1 of Kano state Emirate Council law 2019 to announce the appointment of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the former emir of Bichi as the 15th Emir of Kano in the ruling Fulani dynasty.

“The appointment of the new Emir followed the recommendation received by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje from the Kingmakers,” Usman added.

The governor had earlier said that the dethronement of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, by the Kano state government was as a result of his disregard to the Kano state Emirate law 2019, the state government has said.

There has been love lost between the embattled emir and the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who many believed the Emir withdrew his support from during the 2019 elections.

In his statement, Alhaji said the Kano State Executive Council unanimously approved Sanusi’s dethronement.

“The Emir of Kano is in total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the state Governor and other lawful authorities, including his persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organised by the Government without any lawful justification which amount to insubordination,” Alhaji said.

“It is on record and in so many instances Mallam Muhammad Sanusi II has been found breaching part 3 section 13 (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and which if left unchecked will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirate,” the official added.

The Kano emirate law that Alhaji referenced is the one which created four new first class emirs in Kano State. Before then, the emir of Kano was the only first-class emir in the state.

Sanusi and other members of the Kano emirate are challenging the law in court.
